A long time ago there was a man named Noah. Noah and his family were in an ark with all these animals. There had been a flood and God saved his family because he had been faithful to God and had believed what he said. Noah was told to build an ark. He was given specific instructions how it should be built, and what type of wood was needed. He was told what to bring into the ark for provisions. He was told what to prepare. His neighbors watched Noah and his family building the ark.
They were curious what he was doing. Noah warned his neighbors and friends that God was going to destroy the earth with a great flood. He was building an ark as God had commanded him. Noah and his family were laughed at and mocked. No one believed that there would be a flood. No one saw it coming.
Noah and his family were still faithful and built the ark as God commanded. It took a long time to build the ark. In the meantime, Noah pleaded with his neighbors to believe God. To believe that there was going to be a flood that would wipe out the earth. They did not believe! God brought the clean and the unclean animals into the ark. Noah and his family were safely in the ark.
The people around watched to see what would happen. Droplets of rain came. Then the rain poured down. To everyone’s surprise, God himself closed the door! At that point the people pounded on the door to get in but it was too late! At that point they finally believed the words of Noah!
Noah and his family were on the flood water for 40 nights and 40 days. They searched for land in various ways. Noah looked for dry land. He had sent out birds previously, but they did not come back with any sign of land. One day he sent out a dove. God, as a sign that he had not forgotten Noah, brought the dove back with a sign of land, an olive branch. There was land.
So in the song, On the WINGS OF A SNOW WHITE DOVE HE SENDS HIS PURE SWEET LOVE. A SIGN FROM ABOVE. ON THE WINGS OF A DOVE.
The rainbow is the sign of the promise that God would never again flood the earth. However, people forget the dove and the olive branch that was also a sign of hope and peace to Noah and his family. God has not forgotten his children. He is here in our deepest need.
The song Wings of a Dove was written by Ferlon Husky. I used to sing this on my dad’s organ bench in our living room as he played for our family.
